TT Strategy for Hilly, Chip Seal Course: Hills & Tire Pressure?

TT was quite a beginner, and we couldn’t find answers to these questions in the TT thread.

TT is quite a beginner, and I have never ridden anything as rough as the course I will run this weekend. It is 12 miles (about 19km) and has a single hill with a continuous 6-8% slope up and down and a 12% slope section. I ran the course twice, but I don’t know how to attack the slope. Also, the majority of the course is heavy “chip seal” pavement. Today I ran on 110psi (usually 115psi), but the contact with the road surface was not smooth, and it felt like I was going down while feeling vibration. She weighs 175 pounds and uses a rather rigid TT bike.

I read that it is not good if the air pressure is too high or too low, is there a suitable air pressure?

Attack the downhill. The higher the speed of entering the roller section, the easier it is to maintain the momentum. Do you use 23mm tires? Try lowering the air pressure a little.

Do you have a profile of the course?

It is fitted with a Continental Grand Prix TT Limited, 23c. I don’t care about comfort. I’m just worried that the grip is down.

I think you can probably get a profile from Garmin, but the profile on the racing website does not look correct.

For reference, I am 185-190cm tall and running on 700x23 tires with front 100psi/rear 110psi. Run quite a bit on the chip seal pavement. The tire pressure has some room for adjustment.

I’m not good at TT yet, but when I look at that course profile, I think the winning or losing will be determined by the climbing section. The TT players will tell you to save your physical strength for that section.

In general, the greatest power and effort is poured uphill. On descents, lower the threshold and recover slightly to prepare for the next ascent. The air pressure of the tire is set a little lower.

Down 10% and up 10%. Once you’re over the top, speed up and slow down.

I’m good at flat roads, but I’m not good at high speeds on ascents and descents (if I go 35 miles per hour or more on an aerobar at the age of 63, I’m much more worried about falling than I was 25). I intend to reduce the tire pressure to 100/105 psi. The best strategy is to attack aggressively on climbs, run at a reasonable pace on descents, and attack again on the slightest flat section. The course has been tested twice in advance.

It went better than I had expected. I stepped on the uphill with all my might, turned the pedal around the top, and when I got enough speed on the downhill, I stopped my legs a little coasting.
