NYC Ride DNF After Double Flats, Lessons Learned for Next Year

I’ll try again next year, it was DNF, but NYC was fun.

Both rings were punk, the most holed road I’ve ever seen.

Here’s how:

1.) While moving from the hotel to the starting point, one rider slipped on a wet road with a stretch fitting of the bridge and fell with a deep cut wound to the face. We rescued and two riders sent him back to the hotel.

2.) Start all at once. I am positioned quite backwards of a group of 3,000 people.
3.) Start running. I proceed smoothly, stirring the crowd like a spaghetti. A good rider passes by the side at high speed, and then I stick to the wheel and run through the crowds.

4.) The forward rider waved the bicycle sideways to avoid the dent of the manhole. I hit it and the water bottle flew. When I chased the bottle for a moment and raised my face, I had to step on the brake in a wet downhill corner at high speed. The rear wheel slipped out, realized that it was not in time, and passed between the two riders, but cleared somehow.

5.) The rows of riders passed and I joined them.

6.) The second group passes at a tremendous speed, and it catches on.

7.) Downhill, approaching the group backward at about 80 km/h, plunged into a huge hole. The second water bottle splashes and punctures the front and rear rings.

8.) The rear is replaced with a new tube in 5 minutes. I tried to patch the front looking for a hole, but the CO2 cartridge ran out and gave up.

9.) Eight cyclists stop in the same trouble. I couldn’t help them, and they couldn’t help me. Call my wife to pick me up. It was 20 miles (32 km) out of 100 miles (160 km).

It is running with Racelite tire attached to the carbon 23 "wheel. For now, it has a little different feel than 25 inches, but the grip is solid.

The Mavic Cosmic Carbon is fitted with IRC tubeless tires (25mm, models do not remember). It is not heavy, it is rather lightweight, the ride is excellent, the grip is wonderful, it is resistant to impact (or hole). Installed with Racer Ex. It is one of the best bicycle related products ever purchased.

The simple solution is a combination of compact pumps and CO2. Put the air in the pump first, check the sandwiching and adhesion condition, and finish with CO2 at the end. With a 12-gram cartridge, 23mm tires can easily fill up to 130psi.

Thank you again for the IRC proposal. I like it very much, but it is driven by the urge to try a lighter model, especially for the fall state HC.

For reference, I have been using tubeless for the last few years. The new tires are pretty great (using IRC Roadlite 25). Although it does not break, the puncture rate per mileage is surprisingly low (zero this year, last year, tires are worn out without puncture), and even if you hit a hole sometimes there is no pinch flat. You can insert the tube even if you puncture.

It may be worth considering.

That’s certainly the worst, OP. But NYGF didn’t have any support vehicles, right? Added: I noticed after the post, but that was last year’s story. Still, at the Florida GF I joined earlier this year, when I stopped on the road shoulder to get rid of the rear derailleur garbage, two men in another support vehicle asked me if I needed help.
